Opening Gaits Therapeutic Riding Society of Calgary provides persons with physical or mental disabilities the opportunity to participate in a recreational horseback riding program. Current participants range in age from 5 years to young adults.
For many disabaled children, this is one of the few recreational activites that they can enjoy without their disability inhibiting them. For children unable to wald, riding a horse gives them temporary legs. Horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves the rider's body in a manner similar to a human gait. Riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance and muscle strength. It may also provide the participant with a sense of achievement, improve self confidence and allow them to develop strong a bond with both the horses and the volunteers.
