Researchers who conducted this study found greater knee movement asymmetries in the sagittal plane in patients with low quadriceps strength compared to patients with high or moderate quadriceps strength.

Researchers tested 73 patients at the time the patients were cleared for return to activity after ACL reconstruction. While patients completed a single-leg hop, researchers recorded results for quadriceps strength and activation, IKDC scores, the hop done for distance test and the patients’ sagittal plane lower extremity biomechanics.
Based on the results, there were larger central activation ratios and greater limb symmetry indices on the hop for distance among patients with high and moderate quadriceps strength symmetry vs. patients with low quadriceps strength symmetry. Researchers also found patients with high and moderate quadriceps symmetry had higher knee flexion angle and external moment symmetry. Sagittal plane knee angle and moment symmetry were associated, in the study, with quadriceps strength.
