2016 Western Canada sledge hockey tournament March 25-27

Individuals who wish to play sledge hockey should be aware that it requires a fair amount of upper body strength and balance to move around on the ice. Sledge hockey is a Paralympic sport played at all levels around the world.

Calgary’s most senior level sledge hockey club is the Calgary Scorpions. This team of veteran sledge hockey players over the age of 16 years old plays competitively in the Alberta Sledge Hockey League and at other tournaments throughout Western Canada. They practice alongside the Calgary Stingers on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Joan Snyder Arena located at Winsport. Everyone over the age of 16 with or without a disability is welcome to try out for a roster spot on the Calgary Scorpions at the beginning of each season. 1495478_859374997411825_1007289269245570491_nCalgary’s newest sledge hockey team is recruiting! The Calgary Venom began play within the Calgary Sledge Hockey Association in 2010. The club is intended for novice sledge hockey players with and without disabilities under the age of 12 years old. The Venom play six non-league games per season against other teams from within Calgary Minor Hockey and from the sledge hockey community. They practice on Saturday at Village Square (2623 56 St NE) 12:30pm to 1:45 pm until Xmas and then from 6:15 to 7:30 at the Stew Hendry Arena (814 13 Avenue NE).

The team also participates in the novice division at the annual Western Canada Sledge Hockey Tournament. The Calgary Venom team is always looking for new players to try the sport and actively seeks opportunities to demonstrate sledge hockey in schools or other community based programs.
