Michael Sametz, Para-cyclist on the road to Rio

Michael is overjoyed to represent Canada at the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – fulfilling a dream that began at age 12. Michael grew up in Calgary, participating in and watching many sports while dreaming about competing in the Olympic Games. Focused on this vision, he dedicated himself to training and became stronger and stronger competing against able-bodied men.

He won both the road race and time trial for his category at the Para-cycling Road Nationals in June 2015, earning him an invitation to join the Canadian Para National Cycling team for two international competitions.

Humbled and inspired by the experience of competing at an international event with his idols from Japan, Russia, and Germany renewed Michael’s dedication to the sport. He finished top ten in three out of four events in his category, earning him full membership on the Canadian Para National Cycling team in 2015. He has since travelled the globe racing in more than three continents over 18 months. Highlights of his first season include a Bronze Medal in the time trial at the World Cup in Italy and Silver Medal in the individual pursuit on the track at the Toronto Parapan Am Games.

Michael was born with Cerebral Palsy (CP) affecting the right side of his body causing the muscles to be generally shorter and tighter, especially in his right leg. Treatment included wearing an orthopaedic brace on the lower leg to maintain a normal position of the foot and ankle throughout growth and development.
