Gordon Townsend School, Alberta Children’s Hospital
Dr. Gordon Townsend School is a unique scholastic setting in the Alberta Children’s Hospital. The student population is comprised of young people aged 5-19. These students are continuously admitted and discharged for their significant medical conditions by the medical teams at the ACH.
Dr. Gordon Townsend School provides programs and services to elementary and secondary students with mental health needs, physical/rehabilitation requirements and eating disorders. The population of the school changes drastically over the course of a year. Although approximately 150 students receive programs and services, only about 40 students attend the school at any one time.
This special needs modified school offers several unique programs offered in partnership with the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Health Region. Classes are delivered in a hospital setting with the goal of successful integration into community schools, as soon as possible.
Programs and services are provided by a multidisciplinary team that may include: education, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, recreation therapy, speech/language therapy, psychology, social work, psychiatry, and family therapy.
